Minimization of a Functional
This part develops the passage from finite-dimensional constrained minimization to variational problems. The key output is an Euler–Lagrange equation together with the boundary and integral conditions that complete it.
Learning objectives
After this part, you should be able to compute a first variation, derive the Euler–Lagrange equation, and identify the natural boundary, integral, and path constraints associated with a variational problem.
