This chapter presents a selection of numerical methods for the simulation of differential-algebraic equations (DAEs). The focus is not on developing a complete solver, but rather on exploring basic strategies to handle the numerical integration of DAE systems.

In particular, we discuss how to check for constraint drift—i.e., the gradual violation of algebraic conditions during numerical integration—and introduce simple techniques for stabilization and projection to maintain consistency. These methods aim to preserve the essential structure of the system while keeping the implementation accessible and practical.

Learning objectives

After this part, you should be able to measure constraint drift, explain the trade-off introduced by Baumgarte stabilization, and choose between projection and stabilization for the class of DAE under consideration.
